Orange alert for 11 districts in Kerala on July 31

The revived southwest monsoon is likely to continue for two more days, triggered by a deep depression over west-central Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of Vidarbha and southeast Madhya Pradesh. According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday, the system is very likely to gradually weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours.

However, the state is likely to witness several intense spells affected by the system along with the coastal trough that runs from south Gujarat to north Kerala. Strong westerlies/northwesterlies prevail over Kerala and Lakshadweep region in lower tropospheric levels.

Forecasting heavy rains, the IMD on Friday (July 31, 2026) issued an orange alert for 11 districts in the state except for Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram where a yellow alert has been issued warning of isolated heavy rains. An orange alert was also issued for nine districts and a yellow alert for the remaining five districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kannur and Kasaragod, on Saturday.
