Indian Boxing Contingent Delivers Perfect 5/5 Days, 8 CWG Medals Now Guaranteed

The Indian boxing team enjoyed a dream run at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, achieving a clean sweep in the ring as five wrestlers booked places in the semi-finals, guaranteeing at least bronze medals.

Ankush Yadav, Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach and Narender Berwal all won their quarter-final bouts, extending India’s unbeaten run and taking the country’s semi-final tally to nine.

They joined Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg)Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Jadumani Singh (55kg) who secured semi-final berths earlier in the competition. The latest victory ensured that India have already won at least nine boxing medals in Glasgow.

Sakshi was among the first Indian women to advance and produced a dominant performance to outclass Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers 5-0 in the women’s 51kg quarter-final. Competing in the lower weight category after moving up from 54kg, the Indian boxer made her range and movement count from the opening bell, repeatedly landing clean punches and direct punches while keeping her opponent at bay.

After winning, Sakshi explained how she approached the competition.

“Her strategy was to fight at close range and she kept holding on. Mine was to box from a long distance, which is my strength,”

Fryers tried to disrupt the Indian with relentless forward pressure and frequent close exchanges, but Sakshi remained composed throughout. She dodged most of the incoming attacks with clever head movement before countering with precise combinations. Although the contest featured several clinches, including one exchange where both boxers fell to the canvas in the second round, Sakshi remained in complete control and earned a unanimous decision.

Arundhati Choudhary also made it to the last four, beating New Zealander Morgan Henderson in the category up to 70 kg. Unlike Sakshi’s one-sided victory, Arundhati was pushed a lot harder before finally getting a 3-1 verdict that guaranteed her a medal.

SACHIN CONTINUES IN GREAT FORM

Former World Youth Champion Sachin Siwach continued his impressive form in the Men’s 60kg division with a clinical performance against Botswana’s Treasure Moremi. The world No. 5 dictated the bout from start to finish, earning a 5-0 unanimous decision after impressing all five judges with her composure and clean boxing.

Ankush Yadav followed suit in the men’s 80kg quarter-final, putting in another suggestive display against Seychelles’ Jade Micock. The World Boxing Cup Final silver medalist controlled the bout with sharp combinations, disciplined defense and excellent movement, winning the opening round on all five scorecards before extending his dominance in the second.

Micock struggled to match the Indian pace as Yadav repeatedly found openings with sharp attacks. The judges reflected this dominance in the final score, awarding Yadav a 30-26 verdict on one card and 30-27 on the remaining four to complete another 5-0 unanimous victory.

Narender Berwal capped off India’s excellent day in the ring by defeating Samoa’s Michael Sek via split decision. The heavyweight remained patient early on and refused to be drawn into an all-out slugfest, instead relying on measured attacks to take control of the opening round.

The bout got complicated in the second round after Berwal was awarded two points for illegal strikes, allowing Sek to turn the momentum in his favor on two judges’ scorecards. However, the Indian responded strongly in the closing stages, landing several clean punches and registering two knockdowns before doing enough to secure the decision and secure a place in the semi-finals.

India’s focus now shifts to Jaismine Lamboria, who will face England’s Elise Glynn in the 57kg quarter-final later in the day. A win for Jaismine would make six Indian semi-finalists on Wednesday alone and take the country’s boxing medal tally to 10.
