CWG 2026: Baggage delay disrupts Indian judokas’ preparations in Glasgow
India’s judo contingent has hit an unexpected roadblock ahead of the Commonwealth Games after the luggage of several athletes failed to arrive with the team in Glasgow, just days before the start of the competition.
The 16-member squad landed in the Scottish city from India, but the luggage of several judokas failed to make the journey and the athletes were left without basic training equipment, according to PTI.
The missing luggage is said to contain judogis, a traditional uniform worn during training and competition, along with other training equipment. The delay disrupted the team’s preparations for the judo events scheduled to begin on July 31.
According to PTI, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has taken cognizance of the matter and is working with the concerned authorities to ensure that the luggage reaches the athletes as soon as possible.
The incident comes as another logistical setback for the Indian contingent after a similar problem hit the Indian boxing team earlier this week.
The Indian boxers traveled to Glasgow after a training camp in Belfast, but the luggage of several athletes and support staff members did not arrive with them. The delayed baggage also contained competition and training equipment, forcing the contingent to take backup measures while awaiting its arrival.
As the Games schedule gets under way, Indian officials will be hoping the issue is resolved quickly to minimize any disruption to the athletes’ final preparations.
Judo competition begins on July 31, giving disabled athletes limited time to recover their equipment before stepping on the mat. While baggage delays are not uncommon during international travel, incidents related to Indian boxing and judo contingents expressed concerns about the logistical challenges facing the team ahead of one of the nation’s biggest multi-sport assignments of the year.
The IOA is expected to stay in touch with the airline and local authorities until all the missing luggage is delivered to the athletes, reports PTI.
