India at Commonwealth Games: July 29 schedule, medal events, Glasgow build-up

After another successful day for India in Glasgow, Harjinder Kaur and Gulveer Singh added silver medals in weightlifting and athletics as the contingent continued their impressive campaign at the Commonwealth Games. Attention now shifts to Wednesday where Indians will compete in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, swimming, para swimming and bowling.

Harjinder produced the performance of her career to win silver in the women’s 69kg event. The 29-year-old lifted personal bests of 101kg in the clean and 126kg in the shot put for a total of 227kg, breaking Commonwealth Games records in both lifting events before finishing behind Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau.

Gulveer also impressed, winning silver in the men’s 10,000 meters after staying in the lead, he produced a strong final-lap sprint in 27:49.78 to finish behind Australia’s Ky Robinson.

Earlier, Nirupama Devi’s campaign in the women’s 63kg category ended in disappointment when she failed to record a successful clean and jerk attempt after remaining in medal contention after a pull-down, resulting in a DNF.

Indian boxers also enjoyed a productive day. Priya Ghanghas fought back to beat Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell, while Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh secured convincing victories to reach the semi-finals. All three secured at least bronze medals.

India will have multiple medal opportunities on Wednesday, with 10 medal events scheduled across four sports.

Murali Sreeshankar will lead India’s athletics challenge in the men’s long jump final, while Parul Choudhary will begin her campaign in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final. Manpreet Kaur will compete in the women’s shot put final after Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill feature in the men’s qualifiers. Sprinter Animesh Kujur is also set to compete in the men’s 200m heats.

Another crucial day awaits the boxing contingent, with Sakshi Choudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Yadav, Narender Berwal and Jaismine Lamboria in the quarter-final matches. A win in each event will guarantee them a place in the semi-finals and a medal.
