Police action against YC activists: SIT finds five employees guilty

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to probe the alleged atrocities committed by police personnel against Youth Congress workers during the 2023 car rally of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Navakerala Sadas government submitted its report to the Alappuzha Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. The report found five police officers involved in the controversial “rescue operation” guilty.

According to the report, policemen identified as Anilkumar, the gunman and S Sandeep, security officer of former chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, police officers Shaiju, Vipin and Arun were responsible for the attack. The shooter and a security supply linked to the former chief minister were not previously charged in the case, although the report reportedly found wrongdoing on their part as well. The report was filed after the police found fault. It will also be submitted to the state police chief and recommend the department crack down on five police officers.

The report revealed that the Youth Congress workers were assaulted despite being stopped by the local police. It also recorded the statement of the officers in charge of the case at the time stating that ADGP MR Ajith Kumar, who was then in charge of law and order, directly intervened to protect the gunmen in the case involving the attack on the Youth Congress and KSU workers who staged a black flag protest against former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday, said the state government will initiate legal action against the accused once the SIT report is submitted.
