Samastha’s power equation hinges on the selection of a new general secretary

After the death of K. Alikutta Musliar, intense lobbying began for the post of General Secretary of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the largest organization of traditional Islamic scholars in Kerala.

Alikutty Musliar, who served as General Secretary of Samastha for 10 years, was laid to rest at Tirurkad Juma Masjid graveyard on Friday (July 26, 2026) morning. His death opened a contest between two influential groups within the organization: one affiliated with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the other known as the Shajara group, which views the IUML as just another political party.

Both factions praise Alikutty Musliar for his learning, organizational skills, integrity, spiritual qualities and ability to maintain cordial relations with supporters and detractors alike.

However, unlike his predecessors, Alikutty Musliar was not considered a dominant authority in running the organization. During his tenure, decision-making in the Samastha became more centered around its president, Syed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, who remained at the forefront of the organization’s affairs. Critics within the organization have described the secretary-general’s role as largely nominal.

The General Secretary has traditionally been the key executive authority of the Samastha. Shamsul Ulama EK Aboobacker Musliar, after whom the current Samastha is often identified, served as General Secretary for 40 years until his death in 1996. He was succeeded by Cherussery Zainudheen Musliar, known as Zainul Ulama, who led the organization as General Secretary for two decades until his death in 2016.

Alikutty Musliar succeeded Zainudheen Musliar and held the post for 10 years, but was not considered to exercise the same level of authority. It was known by the honorary title of Shaikhul Jamia.

Samastha Secretary Umar Faizy Mukkam is suggested by the Shajara group as a possible successor. His supporters point to his seniority, knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and assertive approach as his strengths.

However, Umar Faizy is considered an anti-IUML voice within the Samastha. He publicly questioned the suitability of IUML state president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal to become Kazi. IUML supporters oppose his candidature and often accuse him of sympathizing with the CPI(M).

Although the IUML-backed faction has not proposed a specific candidate, its leaders have warned that Umar Faizy’s general secretary could change the character of Samastha.

The names of MT Abdulla Musliar and Abdussalam Baqavi are also being discussed. IUML supporters are said to favor names like Bahaudheen Nadvi, PP Umer Musliar Koyyode and PK Moosakutty Hasrath for the post.
