Apart from the two plants currently operational in Visakhapatnam and Guntur, Andhra Pradesh will get six more waste-to-energy plants in two years, says Local Government and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana.

Inaugurating ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ at Sambamurthy Road in Vijayawada on Saturday, Mr. Narayana said that six power plants are currently under construction. In the remaining municipalities that do not have such plants, tenders were announced to ensure regular waste processing, he added.

The minister said that of the nearly 153 million tonnes of residual waste left behind by the previous regime, the NDA government has cleared around 85 million tonnes by October 2, 2025. “The remaining ones will be removed soon,” said Mr. Narayana.

Giving details of ‘Operation Clean Sweep’, a part of Swachh Andhra initiative, Mr. Narayana said that the four-week program was organized across the state to create public awareness about cleanliness and transform the state into a clean landfill-free Andhra Pradesh with public participation.

Schedule

As part of the program, the minister said that roads and public places will be cleaned in the first week and canals in the second week. During the third week, there would be awareness campaigns on the importance of sorting household waste, and during the fourth week, public toilets would be cleaned. Innovative measures were planned to prevent open urination, he said.

Later, Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K. Pattabhiram said the emphasis was on making AP a model of cleanliness with public participation.
