‘Unhappy with resignation’: Mother of deceased NEET aspirant reacts, demands removal of PM Modi, Amit Shah | Today’s news
The mother of NEET aspirant Akanksha Chaturvedi, who died by suicide, is not happy with the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Akanksh’s mother Neelam Chaturvedi has called for the resignation of the top government leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking strict punishment for the perpetrators of the paper leak.
“My daughter will not come back. We are not satisfied with anything. The government has not come to accommodate us. What will happen to the resignation? Our daughter should get compensation; we are not satisfied with the resignation. Our demand is that our daughter should get justice and compensation and the perpetrators should be hanged,” ANI quoted Neelam Chaturvedi as saying.
Following the news of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhana’s resignation, she said, “Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should also resign. We had to sell our land, will they come back?”
Explaining how the NEET paper leak fiasco affected the family, she said, “Akansha’s father suffered two heart attacks and was also paralysed. Who will take care of us now? If my daughter was alive, she would have managed everything,” NDTV reported.
According to Neelam Chaturvedi, responsibility does not end with resignation. Extending support to the CJP-led student movement, she added, “We are not happy with Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. We have extended our support to the students’ protest. Those involved in the paper leak should be given the death sentence.”
Akanksha’s father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi, also reacted to Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation saying, “I see nothing but my daughter. Our daughter wanted to be a doctor and serve the country.”
Students have been leading massive month-long protests following alleged reports of NEET paper leak and irregularities in the conduct of the exam due to which the exam was canceled on May 3. On Saturday, July 25, Dharmendra Pradhan finally tendered his resignation as pressure mounted in the wake of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests.
Although the authorities conducted a re-examination of NEET, some students like Akanksha were worried after the cancellation of the national-level competitive exam. Unable to handle the mental toll and stress of the medical entrance exam again, Akanksha decided to take her own life rather than appear for the resit exam.
How cancellation of NEET exam made Akansha to take her own life
The 18-year-old student, who had moved from Madhya Pradesh with her family to prepare for the NEET exam, enrolled in a coaching institute in Nagpur to prepare. She appeared for the NEET test on May 3. The NEET aspirant, who was expecting around 650 marks in the competitive exam, hailed from a humble family in Mauganj district. She reportedly fell into depression after the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on May 12 that it would conduct a re-test of the NEET UG.
The aspiring doctor reportedly left behind a handwritten suicide note saying, “I don’t have the guts to take the NEET exam again. I’ve ruined you both,” giving us an insight into the state of her mental health after the NEET exam was cancelled. Another month of waiting, uncertainty and another attempt at NEET created restlessness and mental tension that Akanksha found difficult to bear.
Akansha’s father took a financial risk to support his daughter’s education, including a loan ₹3 lakh through a Kisan credit card to finance her coaching. Her father took odd jobs in Nagpur, even as a cook, to finance his daughter’s household expenses and coaching fees.
