Authorities should introduce safety measures in school vehicles: DC

Deputy Commissioner Rahul Pandve directed the officials that the draft child protection policy for school safety in Karnataka must be strictly implemented.

Expressing concern over buses transporting school children in an unsafe manner, Mr. Pandve said that as per Supreme Court directions, school authorities in the district should strictly follow the guidelines and take extensive security measures.

Mr. Pandve said in a press release that the regional department of transport has been issued the necessary instructions to inspect school vehicles to verify their valid documents, confirm eligibility and submit inspection reports on the 5th day of each calendar month on specific forms. Elaborating on the safety measures for school vehicles, the deputy commissioner said that the vehicles must be marked with “school bus” and “on school duty” on the front and back of the vehicles. Buses should not carry students beyond the carrying capacity of the vehicle.

“Each bus must have a first aid kit for emergency purposes. Vehicles should have iron window grills and fire and emergency equipment and valid certificates of medical fitness. The address and telephone number of the school to which the vehicle belongs must be written visibly. The doors should have proper locking. The driver of such a vehicle should have five years of driving experience with a valid license. Primarily, the vehicles should keep records of their names and surnames, blood types of students, the blood groups of the passengers, said Pandve.

Referring to cases of violation of the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act and the relevant instructions, the Deputy Commissioner said that legal action would be initiated against the violators.
