With ghosts buried, India look for new faces in 3rd T20I vs Zimbabwe

The ghosts of the ill-fated UK tour have finally been laid to rest. After suffering six consecutive defeats and losing the series against Ireland and England, Shreyas Iyer led India to back-to-back victories over Zimbabwe to seal the three-match T20I series with a game in hand. The pressure around the new captain has eased somewhat and Sunday’s third T20I in Harare now offers India an opportunity to look beyond the immediate results and to the future.

After Saturday’s series, Iyer hinted that the series was already in the bag a total victory of 90 runs that India are likely to tweak the playing XI. “Unfortunately one of our players (Prince) got injured so there could be a few changes,” the captain said after the game, but all the fresh faces could get an opportunity, barring confirmation.

The timing could hardly be better. India have little to prove in the series, while the chance to assess the team’s strength ahead of a busy international calendar could prove invaluable. A lime would be an ideal finish, but it will be just as important to give the fringe players meaningful international exposure.

THE INJURY OF PRINCE YADAVA

India’s plans have been affected by Prince Yadav’s hamstring injury sustained during his impressive spell in the second T20I. The right-arm pacer dismissed Ben Curran and Sikandar Raza before picking himself up and leaving the pitch, creating an opening for the bowling attack.

One player who might finally get his chance is Prabhsimran Singh. The Punjab wicketkeeper-batsman has traveled with the team but is yet to make his international debut in any format. An explosive top-order batsman known for his fearless strokeplay, Prabhsimran could be rewarded if India decide to rotate their batting unit.

Another name in contention is Suryansh Shedge. While the all-rounder has already represented India in one-day internationals, he is still waiting for his first T20I cap. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him an attractive option in the dead rubber.

India could also recall left-arm pacer Ashok Sharma, who missed the second T20I after featuring in the series opener. With Prince’s availability in doubt, Ashok appears to be the most direct replacement if the team opts for a similar change.

ZIMBABWE WHITEWASH ON THE CARDS

Although India have been dominated by the series, a major milestone is still up for grabs. The visitors have not whitewashed Zimbabwe in a bilateral T20I series since their 2-0 triumph during the tour in 2010. Completing a 3-0 sweep would highlight the gap between the two sides and cap an impressive turnaround from the disappointing UK.

The batting unit looked increasingly settled as the series progressed. Ishan Kishan’s smooth return to form, Tilak Varma’s consistency in the middle order and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach have given India plenty of positives. While Abhishek Sharma struggled for runs, his three-wicket spell in the second T20I demonstrated the value he brings to the team.

Salvaging some pride will be a priority for Zimbabwe. Brian Bennett again showed why he is regarded as one of the brightest young cricketers in the country, but the hosts lacked a partnership with both bat and ball against a disciplined Indian side.

For Iyer, however, Sunday’s contest is about much more than the pursuit of another victory. The immediate onus to prove himself as a captain was lifted after he secured his first T20I series triumph. This freedom should allow both captain and coach to experiment without the weight of expectation, giving India’s next generation a chance to stake their claim.

HARARE PITCH AND WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Harare pitch has been excellent for batting throughout the series. While the Zimbabwean batsmen tried to make the most of the conditions, India showed in both matches that there are plenty of runs on offer for those who settle down. Another high-scoring game could be on the cards on Sunday, with the bowlers expected to face another tough test.

The weather is also cooperating, with no rain forecast in Harare on Sunday. Clear skies and pleasant temperatures around 21-22 degrees Celsius should ensure ideal conditions for cricket.
