Why did Mohun Bagan withdraw its players from the Indian squad for the Unity Cup?

The competition is set for Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Jamaica.Vishal Kaith, Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Ashique Kuruniyan, Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa, Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco and Suhail Ahmad Bhat are the eight MBSG players in the preliminary squad for the Unity Cup.TimesofIndia.com understands that MBSG has objected to the fact that these matches fall outside the FIFA window, making them liable for any injuries to the players. With the insurance provider raising concerns, MBSG thought it wise to call their players back instead.If a player is injured during the international window, FIFA rules state that the national federation will be responsible for the player’s medical expenses and recovery.A source with the Kolkata giants recalled how the injuries sustained by Subhasish Bose and Aashique Kuruniyan led to the club spending Rs 2.5 million out of pocket on salaries and the rehabilitation process.However, the source did not indicate why the concern was not raised earlier. However, the club has made it clear that it has no problem with players joining the national team for June’s friendlies – when FIFA’s international window opens.The problem also cropped up in November last year. At the time, the club also made it clear that players were free to join the national team, but would do so at their own behest.“Our aim has always been to ensure that fair and appropriate protection is provided for all parties including player, club and national team,” the club said in a statement at the time.The Blue Tigers have gathered in Bengaluru for a camp. The revamped squad will fly to London on May 24 for the Unity Cup.India will face Jamaica in the second semi-final on May 27, while Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the first semi-final at the same time. The two losing teams will play a play-off for third place on 30 June, with the final between the winning teams also scheduled for the same day.
