Shreyas Iyer buries British horror, wins first T20I series as captain of India vs. Zimbabwe

Shreyas Iyer finally has a series win to show as India’s T20I captain. After a forgettable tour of the UK that saw India lose all six matches and concede the series against Ireland and England, the 31-year-old found much-needed redemption in Harare on Saturday.

India crushed Zimbabwe by 90 runs in the second T20I to wrap up the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare, producing another commanding all-round performance after a convincing win in the opener. The win may not erase the scars from the disastrous British tour, but it gives Iyer valuable breathing room after questions were raised over his captaincy following a string of heavy defeats.

India was clinical in every department. A powerful batting display laid the platform before a disciplined bowling effort saw Zimbabwe bowled out for 129 in 17.5 overs while defending 219. With one match remaining, Iyer now has a chance to complete a clean sweep and build momentum ahead of tougher tasks.

India’s innings promised fireworks from the start but briefly lost its way after two quick wickets. Abhishek Sharma’s poor run with the bat continued as the left-hander fell for just eight while teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi dazzled before departing.

Fresh from his series-opening heroics, the 15-year-old looked ready for another special knock as he smashed three boundaries and a towering six during a whirlwind 20 off just nine balls. However, an ill-timed move cut short his entertaining stay and reduced India to 29/2 in four overs.

This brought together skipper Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, who played the check calmly. Iyer played the role of anchor with a composed 25 off 20 deliveries, allowing Kishan the freedom to settle in before launching an attack on the Zimbabwean bowlers.

The wicketkeeper-batsman shifted gears beautifully, reaching his half-century in 31 balls before finishing with a scintillating 81 off 44 deliveries, hitting nine fours and two sixes.

Tilak Varma then ensured that Zimbabwe would never find a way back. The left-hander was fluid from the moment he arrived and exploded in the final overs with an unbeaten 57 off just 27 balls. His unbroken 98-run stand with Kishan turned a solid total into a dismal one as India finished on 219/5.

DEBUTANT THAKUR CHANGES GAME AFTER BENNETT BLITZ

Zimbabwe needed a flying start and Brian Bennett threatened to provide exactly that. The opener took India’s pace attack head on, racing to 32 off 19 balls with three fours and three sixes as the hosts briefly entertained hopes of a record chase.

A breakthrough, however came from debutant Yash Thakur.

The Vidarbha pacer was celebrating his first wicket in international cricket when Bennett miscued an attempted shot into Ishan Kishan’s gloves. It proved to be the turning point of the contest, with Zimbabwe’s innings falling apart almost immediately after the opener was dismissed.

Ravi Bishnoi struck next by removing Dion Myers before Prince Yadav continued his impressive start to international cricket with the wickets of Ben Curran and Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza. The home team conceded wickets at regular intervals and never managed to build another meaningful partnership.

ABHISHEK FIXES, PRICE AFRAIDS OF INJURY

India’s only worry came midway through the chase when Prince Yadav was stopped during his spell by what appeared to be a left hamstring injury. The young pacer was forced off the field after an encouraging outing, leaving India without a top-line bowler for the rest of the innings.

This gave Abhishek Sharma an opportunity to contribute after another disappointing day with the bat.

The all-rounder responded impressively, dismissing Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri and Richard Ngarava to finish with three wickets and snuff out any hopes of a Zimbabwean comeback. Shivam Dube and Tilak Varma also chipped in with a wicket as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 129.

For Iyer, however, this victory carried significance beyond the score. The immediate pressure has eased, but with the series now within reach, Iyer has the perfect opportunity to turn a difficult chapter into the beginning of a new beginning.
