Assam Minister Dibisa Mahanta's daughter goes viral for supporting CJP, chanting anti-government slogans at student protest

Dibisa Mahanta, daughter of Assam government minister Keshab Mahanta, has been in the limelight ever since she joined the student protest at Chachal in Guwahati and extended support to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Her father Keshab Mahanta, who is the working president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), is counted among the top leaders of the party, second only to the party’s state president Atul Bora.

She extended support to the CJP and chanted various slogans on 23 July when a crowd demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and reforms in education following the NEET UG 2026 paper leak controversy. In one such video shared by Northeast Now, she can be seen chanting “We want justice” as the crowd echoed in unison.

In another viral video, Dibisa Mahanta allegedly used anti-government slogans and derogatory terms aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi while shouting the phrase “Neem leaf is bitter; Modi is ****’ in Hindi. Dibisa Mahanta can be seen alongside student activists holding placards and actively chanting slogans in viral videos that are doing rounds on social media.

Social media has been abuzz since then as Dibisa Mahanta created a massive political controversy by participating in a student protest in Guwahati. Notably, the AGP is part of the BJP-led coalition government in the state and AGP leader Mahanta has been the minister since 2016.

Keshab Mahanta, who serves as Minister for Revenue and Disasters, Information Technology, Science, Technology and Climate Change, has been elected five times to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Kaliabor constituency. First in 2006, then 2011, 2016, 2021 and 2026. Prior to that, he served as Minister for Water Resources and Science and Technology, Information and Technology Department, Government of Assam from 2016 to 2021 in the Sonowal Ministry.

Keshab Mahanta reacts to Dibisa Mahanta’s participation in the Chachal protest

Following a massive online backlash, Keshab Mahanta told Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that his daughter had been “misled” by her friends, according to media reports. During the Assam assembly meeting on Friday, AGP working president alleged that Dibisa Mahanta was taken to the protest site on the pretext of attending classes.

Dibis Mahant’s social media accounts appear to have been deactivated or made inaccessible following the controversy, the Sentinel reported. Her Instagram and Facebook profiles were no longer accessible after videos and photos of her participation in the demonstration went viral, the report said.

According to Deccan Chronicle, Dibisa Mahanta secured her higher education from the University of Edinburgh and SOAS, University of London. She completed postgraduate studies in fields related to international studies and nationalism. She expressed solidarity with the students who were injured during the police action at the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march in New Delhi on July 20 and demanded strict action against examination irregularities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also reacted to the student-led protest in Guwahati and while answering questions at a press conference said, “It is a student protest and we respect their demands and arguments. Our Prime Minister is looking into this issue thoroughly,” NDTV reported.
