US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained a Southwest Airlines flight attendant for allegedly overstaying her visa. The man, identified as Lorenzo Thompson, was reportedly arrested in Nashville, Tennessee on July 14, according to several US news outlets.
ICE detained a Southwest Airlines flight attendant
According to Fox News, Lorenzo Thompson, a Jamaican national, entered the US on April 17, 2021 on a visa that, according to ICE, expired on October 16, 2021. “It is against the laws of our country that he overstayed his visa and did not fly. He will remain in ICE custody pending his immigration proceedings,” an ICE spokesperson said.
The agency claimed illegal immigrants are being offered $2,600 along with a free flight to self-deport the US. “We urge anyone who is here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the right to return to the U.S. in the proper legal way to live the American dream,” the agency said, adding, “If not, you will be arrested and deported with no chance of return.”
The union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants, TWU Local 556, confirmed the arrests, Fox News reports. “Every member deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we are committed to making sure this member and his family know they are not alone during this difficult time,” the union’s Facebook post read.
The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) responded, claiming that Thompson was working toward U.S. citizenship.
“He had a valid work visa and was a dedicated flight attendant who touched countless lives with his kindness,” the group shared on social media.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Lorenzo Thompson by his girlfriend, Kristin Foster, to raise money for legal bills in the immigration case, including the cost of transportation from detention, bond payments, immigration filing fees, attorney fees and more.
According to the campaign page, Lorenzo Thompson came to the United States legally from Jamaica in 2021. He allegedly fled life-threatening abuse.
He is said to be working to build a stable life, following legal immigration procedures and seeking permanent status.
Foster said Thompson’s detention put his career and future in jeopardy.
Foster called Thompson someone known for helping others without any expectations.
“Anyone who knows Lorenzo knows that his character is truly remarkable,” read an excerpt from the fundraiser.
The site described him as “honest, caring and loyal, always ready to lend a helping hand without expecting anything in return”.
