Govt. to sell quality rice at subsidized prices through rythu bazaars from August 1

In a bid to stabilize rice prices and provide relief to consumers, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to sell quality rice at subsidized prices through 130 ryth bazaars and around 500 special counters across the state from August 1.

Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Nadendla Manohar announced the decision after reviewing the prevailing rice prices with representatives of rice millers at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Under this initiative, BPT/KNM Super Fine rice would be sold at ₹52 per kg, while Grade-I raw rice would be available at ₹50 per kg, which is about ₹10 less than the prevailing market price.

The minister said the government had received feedback from consumers regarding the steady rise in rice prices, prompting it to take action.

Mr Manohar attributed the rise in prices to factors such as global geopolitical developments, fears of El Niño and rising transport and operational costs. He said the government was committed to ensuring price stability and that a similar intervention earlier by the coalition government had yielded positive results.

The subsidized rice would be sold under the supervision of the civil supplies department through counters run by district rice millers’ associations. To prevent misuse and to ensure that rice is received by genuine beneficiaries, the government plans to introduce biometric or Aadhaar authentication for purchases.

The minister said rice millers agreed to participate directly in the program, eliminating middlemen and allocating 10% of their stock to be sold through special counters. They also assured the government of adequate supply to urban areas and districts with lower rice production.

Mr. Manohar said the initiative would provide quality rice to the public at affordable prices while helping to stabilize the market. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to promote “Brand AP” by strengthening the state’s rice sector, improving quality standards and expanding Andhra Pradesh’s premium rice exports.
