US to announce tariffs today as temporary 10% import tariff nears expiry | Today’s news

The Trump administration is expected to announce a new tariff policy on Thursday (July 23), just hours before a temporary 10% global tariff on imports expires, the White House said.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is set to unveil the next phase of the administration’s trade strategy later in the day, though officials did not release details of the announcement.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed at a White House press conference that an announcement was imminent.

“I would just tell you to stay tuned for more details,” Leavitt said when asked about the impending tariff deadline.

The temporary tariff expires on Friday

The announcement comes ahead of the expiration of a temporary 10% tariff imposed after the US Supreme Court struck down a broader package of tariffs by President Donald Trump in February.

After the decision, the administration quickly imposed a temporary 10% tax on imports to keep parts of its tariff policy in place. However, based on the statutory mandate used, the measure is limited to 150 days and will expire on Friday.

New duties planned for 60 economies

To replace the expiring tariff, the Trump administration has prepared a new round of import tariffs targeting 60 economies over what it describes as concerns related to forced labor.

The proposed tariffs are expected to range between 10% and 12.5% and are aimed at renewing President Trump’s tariff agenda after earlier measures were blocked by the courts.

The new tariffs were developed after a month-long investigation by US trade authorities and are considered more legally durable than the temporary tariffs imposed earlier this year.

Timeline still unclear

While the administration has confirmed that an announcement on tariffs is imminent, officials have not yet specified when the new tariffs will take effect or specify which countries will be affected by the measures.

Jamieson Greer’s expected announcement is likely to clarify the implementation schedule, the scope of tariffs and the legal basis for the new trade restrictions.

The move represents the latest step in the Trump administration’s effort to reshape US trade policy through higher import tariffs, with tariffs remaining a central pillar of the president’s economic agenda.
