Cesarean deliveries in empaneled hospitals will be audited in the AP

Cesarean section performed according to the scheme of Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva at empaneled hospitals in Andhra Pradesh will be subjected to audits by the health department, said Health, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Satya Kumar Yadav.

The minister made the announcement on Thursday at an assessment meeting on the high number of cesarean births performed in hospital networks.

The development comes amid reports of deaths of women undergoing caesarean section delivery in Rajasthan.

The minister said caesarean section should only be performed when necessary and only after assessing the health of the mother and baby, and said hospitals should provide medical reasons, test reports and other evidence to support their decision to perform caesarean section.

According to a Health Department statement on Thursday, the minister directed Director of Secondary Health, KVN Chakradhar Babu, to ensure strict measures are put in place.

Mr. Chakradhar Babu issued a circular to all the hospitals in the network to implement these new guidelines immediately.

“Strict action will be taken against the hospital management for not proving the medical reasons that necessitated the caesarean section delivery. Every hospital performing the surgery must have details of the doctors’ observations, test results and treatment given to the patient,” the minister said, adding that prescribed medical protocols should be strictly followed.

Network hospitals have been ordered to ensure that all doctors and other healthcare professionals involved in treatment are registered with the Registry of Healthcare Professionals.
