
The rules for saving the Energy Keral and the Sustainable Building Act, 2025, which the state government announced, will outline the procedures to be followed during the phases of the design, construction and completion of buildings in the state.
The rules outline the provisions for the commercial building construction to ensure energy saving and the sustainability of the environmental savings and the Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) published by the Energy Efficiency Office.
According to the government announcement, the provisions of the ECSBC apply to commercial buildings with a associated load of 100 kilowatts (kW) or more, or contractual demand of 120 kilovolt-aperes (KVA) or more. Commercial buildings may include cottages, special residential complexes, educational institutions, medical facilities/hospitals, congress centers, offices, retail/commercial buildings and multiplexes.
The code also includes standards and instructions for sustainable aspects and planning, envelope, comfortable system and controls, lighting and controls, electrical and renewable energy systems, water management and inspections, waste management and internal environment quality.
ECSBC provisions are designed to ensure energy efficiency, energy saving, use of renewable energy sources and environmental friendliness in buildings, Energy Management Center – Kerala, which is the State Agency (SDA) for energy efficiency matters.
The newly announced rules further expand the powers of energy savings in Kerala and the sustainable implementation of the Building Code headed by the main secretary.
