Hasmatullah Shahidi steps down as Afghanistan ODI captain in historic four-year series

Veteran Afghanistan batsman Hashmatullah Shahidi has relinquished his role as captain of the ODI team but will continue to represent the side in the 50-over format as a player. The 31-year-old has been named Afghanistan’s ODI captain for the start of 2022 and has led the team in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also continues to serve as Afghanistan’s Test captain.

One of Shahidi’s most memorable performances as captain came against India during the 2023 World Cup when he scored a fluent 80 off 88 deliveries to help Afghanistan reach 272. However, India’s chase was comfortably completed by Rohit Sharma’s team. Under Shahidi, Afghanistan won 27 out of 55 matches

“Today, with full respect and approval, I announce that I am resigning as captain of my team based on my personal decision,” Shahidi wrote on social media.

Under Shahidi’s leadership, Afghanistan enjoyed a historic World Cup campaign in 2023, securing wins over England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. An impressive run saw them narrowly miss out on a place in the semi-finals before Shahidi led the team in the Champions Trophy.

“It has been a great honor for me to carry out this responsibility as captain. I am proud to have served alongside my team with integrity, unity and dedication,” he added.

“By the grace of Allah, with the efforts of officials, coaches and players, we have achieved many victories, won important matches, defeated big teams and made the name of the team higher.”

Confirming his decision to step down as ODI captain, Shahidi said he remains available for selection in the format. Afghanistan are expected to name a new ODI captain ahead of their five-match series against Ireland next month.

“All these achievements are not only mine, but also the result of teamwork, sacrifice and coordination of the entire team.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the players in my team who have always supported me and stood by my side in every victory and every challenge,” he said.

“I also thank the officials and team management who believed in me and always supported me. Your trust and cooperation will always be an honor for me,” he added.

The left-handed batter has amassed over 2,600 runs in 96 ODIs, including one century.
