A transformer failure halts the Rapid Metro and triggers a blackout in half a dozen sectors of Gurugram
Gurugram’s rapid metro services came to a standstill for nearly 45 minutes on Thursday evening after a major transformer failure at the 220 kV Sector-72 substation triggered widespread power outages across the city.
Services were disrupted from 7:50 pm to 8:33 pm, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed. Once the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (HVPNL) restored power supply through the Sector-72 substation, normal operations were resumed. Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed passengers evacuating and walking precariously on the tracks during the power outage. The disruption affected the entire Rapid Metro network, which relies on power supplied from the Sector-72 facility.
The outage also affected seven substations supplying parts of Gurugram – Sectors 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, 56 and the Maruti 66 kV power plant. Residential areas in sectors 38 to 57, sector 15, part 1 and 2 and sector 18 faced power cuts as a result.
According to Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) spokesperson Sanjay Chugh, the fault occurred in both the 220 kV circuits at the PGCIL Sector-72 facility after the CT, or current transformer, of one circuit was damaged. The second circuit was restored within 30 minutes and is currently carrying a full load, prompting authorities to warn of precautionary cuts in some areas.
HVPNL and DHBVN teams are working to repair the damaged transformer, a process expected to take 8 to 10 hours. Full supplies are expected to be restored late tonight.
While Rapid Metro services were suspended, DMRC said Yellow Line operations were maintained through an emergency substation and ran normally during the period.
