New syllabus for classes IV-XII which includes subjects on new technologies

Emerging technology, rapid engineering and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning are some of the subjects that will soon be incorporated in the new curriculum for classes IV-XII.

The curriculum design committee of the school education department met in Chennai on Tuesday to discuss and formulate the curriculum plan for classes IV-XII. Last month, the department presented a new syllabus I.-III. Speaking at the meeting, Education Minister Rajmohan said, “TNSPARK is being taught in government schools. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has also advanced and we will also teach students rapid engineering.”

Mr. Rajmohan stated that there is a lot of push for artificial intelligence and said that conventional teaching and learning is a must. “This will also be the focus of the curriculum we are formulating. In this evolving world of artificial intelligence, we also need to cultivate natural intelligence in our students to ensure their growth,” he said. The minister also added that art will have equal importance and priority will be given to STEAM education.

At the meeting, the committee approved the development of a new curriculum, syllabus and textbooks for classes VI-VIII to be implemented from the next academic year. “A proper integration of digital awareness and emerging technologies will ensure that students are equipped to navigate the world with equal importance to ethics,” experts from the committee said.

After the implementation of the new curriculum for classes IV-VIII, the implementation of the curriculum, syllabus and textbooks for classes IX-XII will begin in 2027-28. The commission said it aims to raise confident, curious and capable students who are academically strong, emotionally resilient and socially responsible.
