The court rejected the bail pleas of the seven accused in the attack on the ED team

The Thiruvananthapuram District and Sessions Court on Tuesday rejected the bail pleas of seven CPI(M) workers accused of allegedly assaulting Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials during a raid at the residence of Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan.

The court rejected the bail pleas filed by Sreejith, Dineeth, Amal, Shyju Salim, Anil Kumar, Nishad and Dinakar. The prosecution, led by Special Public Prosecutor A. Santhosh Kumar, said the investigation is still ongoing and granting bail at this stage could adversely affect the ongoing investigation. He added that the investigation team is following various leads that could reveal a wider conspiracy in the case.

The defense argued that although charges including attempted murder were leveled against the accused, the prosecution did not present sufficient evidence to support such charges. However, the court did not accept the argument.

The ED also opposed the bail pleas, arguing that assault on officials should be treated as a serious offence. The agency’s counsel also said that a similar attack on ED officials had taken place in West Bengal in the past and that a senior political leader in the particular case continues to remain in custody.
