On Thursday (April 3, 2025), at least eight people from inhalation of toxic gas came when they entered the well to clean it in the Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh, the police said.
According to the police, the incident took place around 16:00 in the village of Condavat under the limits of the Chaigaon Makhan police station, when three men entered the well on the outskirts of the village, with regard to the ongoing gangour festival and idol of the immersion, which was to be held on Friday.
Khandwa Superintendant of Police Manoj Rai said Hindu that all eight bodies were acquired and victims are men between the ages of 22 and 55.
“The first three people went to the well and started cleaning. When they cleaned some mud, it started to escape the gas, resulting in fainting men. Two other men went to check them, but also fainted and collapsed,” Rai said, adding that eight men entered the well and all of them died.
Mr. Rai said that the well is mainly used for religious processes and immersion.
“We closed the surroundings and the team of strength to disasters (SDRF) and the local police restored the bodies. They also emptied the well using protective equipment and machines,” he said.
Mr. Rai said that poison gas is suspected of methane, but will be confirmed after postmort.
Main Minister Mohan Yadav ended his death and announced to the families of every victim of ex-Gratia RS4 lakh.
“Once the incident information was received, the police, administration, home guards and the Sderf team, were grinded at this hour of grief, a joint rescue operation was provided to provide financial aid of 4 £ 4 Lakh,” Yadav said in X Post.
