A gang kills an elderly couple in Salem to rob one sovereign gold jewel

An elderly couple was beaten to death and robbed of one sovereign in the Salem neighborhood on Monday (July 20, 2026) night.

Police said the victims Jayaraman (85) and his wife Amaravathi (70) were staying in a cottage at Kundukkal near Kadayampatti. The couple’s two sons and two daughters, who lived separately in the locality, regularly sent them food.

On Monday evening, while the couple was in their hut, an unknown gang entered, attacked them with wooden logs and killed them. The gang looted gold earrings and a nose ring completely weighing one ruler of Amaravathi and fled. Later around 9 pm, when their family members came to provide food, they found the duo dead in a pool of blood and alerted the Deevattipatti police.

The police reached the spot and sent the bodies to Salem State Hospital for autopsy. Acting on information, Salem Range DIG Santosh Hadimani and Salem District Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Kuthalingam reached the spot and conducted an investigation. The Deevattipatti police have registered a case and are searching for the killers.
