Nine arrested in Guntur mugging case

The Guntur district police on Monday warned of strict legal action against those spreading misinformation and sharing videos that violate the dignity and privacy of a woman allegedly involved in the recent attack at Krishnababu Colony in Nagarampalem police station limits.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Vakul Jindal said the police acted immediately after receiving the woman’s complaint on July 16. The complainant approached the police station after receiving medical treatment for her injuries, after which a case was registered under Sections 331(6), 79, 115(2), 118(1) read with Section 3(5) of the Sanhharatiya (NSAya Bharatiya) Act.

The SP said nine accused persons involved in the incident were identified, arrested and produced before the court, which sent them to judicial custody. He added that all legal procedures required in the case had been initiated. Nagarampalem Circle Inspector (CI) Satyanarayana has been suspended as part of the departmental action.

Expressing concern over the circulation of videos related to the incident on social media, Mr. Jindal said such acts seriously threaten the dignity and privacy of a woman. The police are registering another case, criminal offense No. 273/2026 under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, against the persons responsible for sharing the videos.

The SP warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who spreads false information, makes objectionable remarks about a woman or spreads content that harms her dignity through social media or other platforms.
