1. The TN cabinet discusses the budget

Details of the upcoming state budget were discussed during the Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai today (July 16, 2026).

Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the death of under-trial prisoner S. Sabari Varman in Nagercoil and the government would stand firm with the victims in case of death in jail or arrest.

2. Government officials facing corruption charges not eligible for promotion: Madras HC

A government official facing corruption charges cannot legitimately seek promotion just because his/her name was included in a promotion panel prepared much before she was charged in a ministerial proceeding, the Madras High Court has ruled.

3. Six men arrested for stealing silver-decorated land from Hindustan Photo Films factory

The Nilgiris District Police have arrested six persons including a TVK branch secretary from ward number 2 in Udhagamandalam for breaking into the defunct Hindustan Photo Films (HPF) factory and illegally transporting more than three tonnes of soil believed to be laced with silver nitrate accumulated when the factory was operational.

4. Nainar Nagenthran appears before a court in Chennai

Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran appeared before a court at the George Town Court complex in Chennai and received a copy of the charge sheet in connection with a case involving the seizure of ₹3.99 crore from one of his employees on the Nellai Express train ahead of the 2024 assembly elections.
