CM accused of land purchase: Madhya Pradesh govt introduces UCC law amid Congress protests

The Madhya Pradesh government on Monday (July 20, 2026) introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly, which witnessed rowdy scenes as the Opposition demanded a discussion on alleged land purchases linked to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

The state government tabled the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026 on the opening day of the five-day monsoon session, even as Congress members demanded an urgent debate on the alleged scam in Ujjain.

The House was adjourned for 30 minutes after members of Congress stormed the well. Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar said the House will begin discussion on the UCC Bill on Tuesday (July 21, 2026).

A recent newspaper report alleged that Mr Yadav and his family members had bought huge plots of land after he became Chief Minister – an allegation the BJP dismissed as baseless. As the Question Hour ended, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar raised the issue of land purchases linked to the Chief Minister and family through an adjournment motion and called for strong objections from BJP legislators and ministers.

Assembly Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya opposed the demand and said the matter could not be taken up through an adjournment motion. He argued that an adjournment motion usually refers to a recent development, not an old one.

Congress MLAs rushed into the well of the House shouting slogans and Mr. Singhar claimed that the adjournment motion related to the alleged acquisition of land linked to the Simhastha area and the alleged purchase of land by the Chief Minister’s family, insisting on a discussion. As members of Congress refused to budge, the Speaker adjourned the meeting for 30 minutes.
