The Vellore district police destroyed 10,568 kg of seized gutkha products on Sunday. The contraband was destroyed in an open plot in Thangal village on the outskirts of Vellore Corporation after obtaining the necessary permission from the court.
Police said Superintendent of Police NU Sivaraman ordered the destruction of seized tobacco products as part of an ongoing drive to curb smuggling and use of gutkha products.
Gutkha products were seized in numerous enforcement operations and vehicle checks within police stations like Pallikonda, Vellore Taluk, Virinchipuram and Anaicut, which come under Vellore division of the district. Police said the disposal process was carried out after “strict adherence to legal and environmental standards” at the selected site.
