The Supreme Court Bar Association has hit out at the “disgust” at lawyers’ reels

The Kerala High Court Advocates Association (KHCAA) has objected to the social media reels posted by lawyers, saying many “do not uphold the ethics and dignity of advocates”.

The body of lawyers recently issued a circular asking its members to refrain from creating social media content in and around court premises. According to the Secretary of the Association, such content could trigger legal action under the provisions of the Advocates Act.

One of the latest films to attract attention features a young female lawyer who alternates between scenes of working out at the gym in sportswear and appearing in professional attire on the court premises. A complaint has been filed against a Kottayam-based lawyer who posted the reel on her Instagram account.

Another video begins with the lawyer recounting her day in court and chatting with a friend in the corridor of the Kerala High Court, with the footage shot on the court premises. The association received a complaint about the second video, said Nima Jacob, KHCAA secretary.

The association will conduct a preliminary inquiry into the alleged reel recording by a lawyer before referring the matter to the Kerala Bar Council and the Kerala High Court Registry, the two bodies empowered to initiate legal action in such cases, Ms Jacob said.

Such videos typically begin with defense attorneys recounting their day in court, often in court attire, before transitioning to scenes in restaurants or at home, she pointed out. The lawyer declined to comment on the controversy surrounding her social media posts.

Incidentally, the Bar Council of India had earlier issued a comprehensive circular dealing with the “growing and disturbing” tendency among lawyers to record videos in court premises, spread misinformation, scandalous comments about court proceedings and circulate fake judgments or fabricated extracts of court orders.
