Clarity on application required from ECI

Volunteers assisting the public with the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of Electoral Rolls have asked the authorities for an explanation regarding an application that allegedly displays SIR-related information, including the classification of the Electoral Roll form.

According to volunteers and activists, the app is available on the Google Play Store.

MA Mujeeb, an activist who helps a large number of people to fill the SIR enumeration forms, said there is a need to clarify how the app accesses voter-related information.

“Many people have shared screenshots of the app. Some are relieved as they believe they don’t have to submit documents, while others are worried if the status shown is different,” said Mr Mujeeb, who heads the Adalah volunteer organization in Karimnagar.

Hyderabad-based activist SQ Masood also sought an explanation from the Election Commission of India (ECI) through a post on the social media platform. “Private app shows current #SIR data and status of people tagged in category 1, 2 and 3. This has created panic among the public,” he wrote.

Independent researcher Srinivas Kodali said the bigger issue is not the mobile app itself, but the purpose for which the SIR data can be used. “Will voter data be used for other applications? What ECI is doing to ensure that SIR data is used only for revision exercise should also be clear,” he said.
