Ben Duckett broke Viv Richards’ 47-year-old Lord’s ODI record with 141 vs. India

England opener Ben Duckett produced one of the best ODI innings at Lord’s on Sunday, smashing a career-high 141 against India to surpass Viv Richards’ 47-year-old record for the highest individual score at the iconic venue.

Duckett’s 141 off 120 balls helped England consolidate in the third and final ODI and also made him the first batsman to score a century in a three-match series. The left-hander reached his hundred in 108 deliveries before going on to rewrite the record books at the Home of Cricket.

The previous record was held by West Indian great Viv Richards, whose unbeaten 138 against England in the 1979 World Cup final was the highest individual ODI score at Lord’s in nearly five decades. Duckett went past the landmark in the closing stages of his innings before eventually succumbing to Prince Yadav.

Duckett was in complete control from the start after England chose to bat. He drove the offside fluidly, pulled anything and rotated the strike with ease as the Indian bowlers struggled to find answers on a good pitch.

The opener added 192 runs for the first wicket with Jacob Bethell, giving England an ideal platform in the series decider. After bringing up his century, Duckett continued to attack and took the hosts past the 220-run mark with many overs to spare.

India’s attack, missing injured pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, lacked the edge needed to stop England’s attack. The seamers failed to apply sustained pressure while the spinners failed to disrupt Duckett’s rhythm as he regularly found the boundary.

Duckett’s innings finally ended when Prince Yadav fooled him with a slower bouncer. The left-hander looked to pull, hit the shot straight back to the bowler and departed for 141. The Lord’s crowd rose to applaud the memorable knock that rewrote one of the venue’s oldest ODI records.
