India and England players observe a minute’s silence at Lord’s in memory of Garfield Sobers

India and England players paid their respects to the legendary Sir Garfield Sobers with a minute’s silence before the Lord’s ODI on Sunday 19 July. The West Indies legend died on Thursday, July 17 at the age of 89.

Sobers changed the game with an extraordinary range of skills that few cricketers have ever equaled. A gifted left-arm batsman, he could switch seamlessly between left-arm pace and spin bowling, while his brilliance in the field made him one of the most complete all-rounders the sport has witnessed.

Sobers broke into West Indies Tests at the age of 17 and enjoyed a stellar international career spanning 93 Tests. He amassed 8,032 runs at an impressive average of 57.78 while scoring 26 centuries. His impact extended beyond the bat, with 235 Test wickets and 109 catches underlining his immense value as a true three-dimensional cricketer.

Along with a minute’s silence, all players from both sides will wear black armbands for the game as a mark of respect to Sobers’ memory.

KOHLI, TENDULKAR PAY THEIR TRIBUTES

Kohli led the tributes to Sobersreminiscent of the legendary jack-of-all-trades as one of gaming’s greatest icons. Sharing an emotional message on social media, Kohli said that cricket has lost a true legend and that Sobers’ remarkable legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

“Cricket has lost one of its greatest. Rest in peace Sir Garfield Sobers. Your legacy will inspire generations,” Kohli said on X.

Sachin Tendulkar also paid tribute to the cricketing great and recalled some of the precious moments they shared over the years.

“It’s incredibly hard to process that Sir Garry is gone. I’ve been looking back at the memories we’ve shared over the years, from when he presented me with the player of the tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup, to his warm words when he congratulated me on the century milestone. He was always so exceptionally kind. My mind still goes back to when we caught up in London and talked about that match a few years ago. was the last time we ever met, he was truly ‘The One’, we will miss him immensely Sir Garry,” Tendulkar said on X.
