Surprise reviews at restaurants in Kochi

On Saturday (July 18, 2026) evening, joint surprise checks were conducted at restaurants in Kochi by the Health Department, Food Safety Department, Kochi Corporation Health Department and the police. Inspections took place in hotels, street stalls and roadside restaurants.

District physician Dr. R. Shahirsha said inspections would continue in more areas in the coming days. He added that punitive measures will be taken against those who handle food in a manner that leads to the spread of infectious diseases. All establishments involved in the preparation and handling of food and beverages must strictly adhere to the guidelines, he said in a statement.

Inspections were held at seven establishments in Kaloor and Kadavanthra. Drinking water samples were collected and sent for testing from six stores that did not have drinking water quality test protocols.

Fines were imposed on stores where deficiencies were found. Penalties were imposed on outlets found to be operating without a licence, lacking drinking water quality test protocols or without health certificates. The special drive was carried out following a joint inspection held in June.
