A group of citizens launched a signature campaign that has expanded its awareness of the importance of maintaining the Hyderabad cultural heritage and the ongoing controversy of maintaining Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex. They plan to submit representation to Chief Minister A. Revant Reddy and seek his intervention.
The group includes a former member of the Sajjad Shahid Heritage Protection Committee, Ayoob Ali Khan and the Academic Oudesh Rani Bawa. Their initiative is governed by the accusations against Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which has renewed the complex since 2013, when the congress was in power in the undistributed Andhra Pradesh.
According to the group, the then congress government was invited to keep the tombs and restore more than 80 structures using traditional materials. They stressed that the project, which is considered an important effort to protect, has gained international recognition, including the UNESCO-Pacific Asia-Pacific 2022 Award for the protection of cultural heritage.
They noted that the letter of 24 September 2024, addressed to the High Court in Telangana, reportedly damaged the tombs. The court took the knowledge and issued the notification to the government and the actc in March. The group, however, pointed out that the project passed through mutual reviews and regular official inspections. In the petition they urged the government to verify the author’s identity.
“Public support collection is essential. People show interest in inheritance problems occasionally – just as Irrum Manzil – but then silent. There is a favorable court order and nothing happens later. We have to keep track of and protect our heritage,” Shahid said.
