Opposition leaders criticized the Delhi Police after they took away activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest site in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday morning and admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Leaders like Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bharadwaj slammed the event and in a post on X, Sisodia said, “So this is the solution Modi gave her for paper leaks… Beat up the fools to raise their voice against the paper leaks and don’t let them raise their voice against politics. thugs..”

Sanjay Singh claimed that Wangchuk was forcibly taken away despite being on a long fast.

Sonam Wangchuk was removed from the protest site by the Delhi Police on the orders of the Hon’ble High Court and an expert medical board due to his deteriorating health as a result of his indefinite hunger strike.

The Delhi Police claimed to have exercised the utmost restraint during Wangchuk’s removal, although protesters reported that police entered in plainclothes and used white sheets to block the camera’s view during the incident.

Before hospitalization, Sonam Wangchuk was reported to be weak due to prolonged starvation and dehydration, which required medical intervention for basic care.

“Shamelessness at Jantar Mantar. Cops from Modi Govt. Delhi who changed into civilian clothes and sports shoes forcefully entered the protest site. They brought dozens of white sheets to block the camera view so that any violence/manipulation of Sonam Wangchuk and others was not caught on video. That’s how shameless Modi Govt is,” Bharadwaj said in a post on X.

TMC leader Sagarika Ghose also criticized the police for the action.

Samajwadi Party Lok Sabha MP Dimple Yadav said the police action was an “attack on democracy”.

“The forcible removal of Sonam Wangchuk is not just one action but an attack on democracy and the constitution. The BJP government can no longer tolerate even peaceful protests – this is tyranny,” she said in a post on X.

What did the police say?

DCP New Delhi, in a post on X, said Wangchuk was removed from the protest site and taken to a hospital “on the orders of the Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advice”.

They also asked the protesters to leave the place as soon as possible.

“As per the orders of the Hon’ble High Court and on the advice of a specialist doctor due to the deteriorating health condition of Sh. Sonam Wangchuk, he was shifted to the hospital for necessary medical treatment,” the police said, adding, “While the protesters were following the orders of the Hon’ble High Court, the protesters tried to create a roadblock in which there was a slight ruckus, however, the police stayed at their best.”

What did Safdarjung Hospital say?

Safdarjung Hospital confirmed through a statement through its PRO that Wangchuk was admitted there.

The statement said, “This is for your kind information that Mr. Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. He is currently being examined by the attending doctors. An official press release will be issued soon.”

The hospital later issued another update, saying Wangchuk was weak due to prolonged starvation and dehydration. He added that Wangchuk’s health condition is stable but requires continuous monitoring.

“Mr. Sonam Wangchuck has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for required medical care. He is weak due to prolonged starvation and dehydration. Although he is currently stable, he requires constant observation, monitoring and treatment to restore his physical parameters,” the statement said.

Wangchuk’s wife issues a statement

Gitanjali J Angmo, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, released a statement on social media saying the activist should not be given anything “orally or intravenously” without approval from her, his family or the doctors who were monitoring his health.

“I am at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where @Wangchuk66 was admitted. Nothing should be given to him orally or intravenously without consent from me, his family and his doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days,” Angmo said in X’s post.
