Chennai Grand Masters: World champion Gukesh was stunned by Firouzja in the 2nd round

Reigning world champion D Gukesh suffered his first defeat at Chennai Grand Masters 2026 after going down with French grandmaster Alireza Firouza in the second round of the elite classic tournament on Friday.

Firouzja continued his sensational start to the event as he moved to a perfect two points from two games after an opening round victory over M Pranesh with another impressive win. The Frenchman is now the sole leader in India’s first classical chess tournament.

The day’s marquee clash began with Deepraj Mukherjee, General Manager, The Westin Chennai Velachery, performing the ceremonial first pitch. Firouzja opted for Ruy Lopez with the white pieces while Gukesh defended confidently for most of the match.

The world champion seemed to have done enough to hold the game in the knight-pawn endgame, but Firouzja found a breakthrough at a critical moment. A well-calculated pawn sacrifice created winning chances and the French star converted his lead with a precise finishing technique after 69 moves.

It was a disappointment for Gukeshwho started the tournament with a win and wanted to gain momentum in front of their home fans.

Elsewhere, Indian grandmaster M Pranesh bounced back from his opening round loss by holding Russia’s Dmitri Andreikin to a quick draw with the black pieces. The players redoubled moves after only 18 moves, with neither willing to take any unnecessary risks.

Arjun Erigaisi also shared a point against Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Playing with the black pieces, Arjun matched his higher-ranked opponent throughout the match for 43 moves before the players agreed to a draw from the same position.

In the longest game of the day, Nihal Sarin put up a determined defense against American Grandmaster Hans Niemann. Niemann pressed for over six hours and 132 moves, but Nihal held firm to secure an impressive draw after repeatedly thwarting his opponent’s attempts to force a break.

Hosted by MGD1, the eight-player two-round tournament carries a purse of Rs 75 crore and valuable FIDE Circuit points. Firouzja is alone at the top of the standings with two wins in as many rounds Gukesh will try to respond strongly in the third round.
