Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha was arrested on Friday during a protest outside the secretariat against the state government’s handling of the ongoing paddy procurement issues.

Ms. Kavitha led a large demonstration along with TRS workers and women supporters and staged a sit-in and symbolically dumped rice on the road to highlight the plight of farmers who are said to be suffering due to delayed procurement operations.

Police intervened and detained her and several other party leaders and shifted them to Falaknuma police station before later releasing them.

Speaking to the media before her arrest, Ms Kavitha accused the government of a “cruel and indifferent” attitude towards farmers. She alleged that several distressed farmers were dying on piles of harvested grain while waiting for purchase due to administrative negligence.

Criticizing the government, she said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had not held a single review meeting on the Agriculture Department in the last two-and-a-half years.
