The government has decided to modernize and develop 1,000 government schools like Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) in the next two years with the help of Community and Corporate Social Responsibility (CCSR) fund.
The schools will be built in gram-panchayats, urban local bodies and Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) areas that do not yet have KPS schools. The government has also allowed contributors/donor organizations to brand their organization with the name of the schools they establish and support.
The Government has issued guidelines and notified Karnataka State CCSR Monitoring Committee, School Education CCSR Cell and District/GBA Level CCSR Cells.
Karnataka State CCSR Monitoring Committee is headed by the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister will be the Deputy Chairman. Ministers and senior officers will be members.
The CCSR School Education Cell is chaired by the Ministerial Commissioner, the CCSR District Cell is chaired by the District Collector and the GBA CCSR Cell is chaired by the GBA Chief Commissioner.
There are currently 325 KPS schools operating across the state. In the current academic year, the state government has taken steps to develop 500 KPS clusters with the help of about ₹2,000 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
About four million students study in government schools and pre-university colleges (classes 1 to 12) in Karnataka. The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has taken steps to improve the quality of learning.
Each KPS school provides education to about 1200 students from 8 to 15 villages. These schools provide education in Kannada and English bilingual medium from pre-school to class 12 with emphasis on computer education, skill training in industry related curriculum, special classes for competitive exams.
The government aims to establish one KPS school in each Gram Panchayat across the state and provide free school transport facility to reach these schools.
In this context, the state government has decided to strengthen partnership with CCSR contributions and expand KPS schools across the state.
In the financial year 2024-25, an estimated more than ₹ 352 crore of CCSR contributions have been disbursed through various initiatives including infrastructure development, teacher training and provision of digital education support.
