Thomas Tuchel is optimistic about England’s future despite criticism following their World Cup exit

Thomas Tuchel has insisted on his determination to lead England through to Euro 2028, despite the Three Lions’ heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina. England’s hopes of reaching the finals were dashed on Wednesday when the defending champions staged a dramatic late comeback.

Anthony Gordon’s second-half strike steered Tuchel’s side to victory. but Argentina turned the game on its head in the final minutes. Enzo Fernandez restored parity before Lautaro Martinez headed home a stoppage-time winner, with Lionel Messi providing crucial assists for both goals to seal a 2-1 triumph and set up a final against Spain.

The defeat also brought renewed focus on Tuchel’s tactical challenges. The German manager faced criticism for his substitutions, particularly his decision to withdraw striker Gordon in favor of defender Ezri Konsa with less than 20 minutes remaining, a move which sparked sustained pressure from Argentina and ultimately prevented England’s collapse.

Tuchel was left to face an onslaught of criticism for his calls during the game, especially after being guided by former players and pundits. Wayne Rooney said the England manager’s approach was too passive and punched the German tactician for not chasing the second goal.

The likes of Alan Shearer, Gary Neville and Micah Richards have also criticized Tuchel for the way he has managed the game. Despite this, Tuchel said his aim is to ensure he finishes the remainder of his contract, which runs until Euro 2028.

“We’re continuing our contract until the home Euros. I’m looking forward to it, even if it’s hard to look that far ahead now,” Tuchel said.

Ahead of the start of the campaign, Tuchel extended his contract with England until the home Euros in 2028.

MAKE YOUR BACK TUCHEL

ESPN reported that the Football Association continued to back Tuchel despite England’s World Cup disappointment. The governing body, who extended the German’s contract until 2028 ahead of the tournament, remain keen to keep him in charge as the team shift their focus to the European Championships.

England will face France in the play-off for third place on Saturday 18 July.
