The Green Activist based in Assam asked the Center to cancel the authorization of the Major Oil India Limited (Oil) to create a research and development center in the ecological zone of the Dibru-Saikhow National Park.

The National Park described the biosphere reserve in 1997, covering 765 km2 km. Fry the districts of Dibruugarh and Tinsukia. It has a base area of 340 km. Km. And he is known for his wild horses.
On March 27, the environmentalist Apurba Goswami, based in Golaghata secretary, wrote to the Ministry of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change and said that the establishment of the Center for Research and Development in the Ecological Zone of the Park was a bad idea.
He said that the ecological zone of Dibru-Saikhow, which is recognized as a global hotspot of biodiversity, is home to several endangered species, including white wing wooden duck, gangnetic dolphin and Bengal Florik.
“The ecological zone sensitive to ecological sensitivity intended for the Ecosystem of Dibru-Saikhow, already faced serious stress, as shown in Baghjan oil until 2020, led to the distinction of vegetation oil only 1.6 km.”
He pointed out that the findings of the National Court Green Tribunal stressed that after the outbreak there was no compulsory assessment of impacts on biological diversity.
Given the record result of Oil, which would allow him to establish a research and development center in an ecologically fragile area, could spell a disaster for this region, Mr. Goswami said.
“Factorictory”
Mr. Goswami said in 2024 rejected the Advisory Committee of Forest Forests (FAC) a proposal for commercial drilling seven wells inside the national park using expanded range technology. This decision was based on the Supreme Court orders in 2006 and 2023, which forbids mining activities in national parks and its surroundings.
However, FAC, which operates under the Ministry of the Environment, recommended that oil to create its research and development center.
The environmentalist said that the approval of the project, after refusing another in the same area, raises questions about the government’s intentions. “It seems that the choice of Dibru-Saikhow is less about scientific necessity and more about circumventing previous rejection of commercial drilling,” he said.
Unlike approval, he demanded a transparent and independent assessment of environmental impacts, which includes entry from local stakeholders before any proposals are taken into account.
Mr. Goswami questioned the justification of the approval of the oil equipment in the Dibru-Sikhow zone, when all the main oil companies, including oil and natural gas, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Indian Oil Corporation, except oil, have their operational and research centers in industrial areas throughout the country.
