A petition by the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress faction seeking to direct the police to allow its Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 outside Victoria House at the Esplanade will be heard by the Calcutta High Court on July 15.

The petition filed on July 10 was mentioned before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya on Monday (July 13, 2026) by a lawyer for the faction seeking an early hearing.

Justice Bhattacharyya said the matter would be heard on July 15.

A faction of the TMC led by Mamata Banerjee filed a petition praying that their Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 be allowed in front of Victoria House in the busy Esplanade area of central Kolkata.

The petition challenges the Kolkata Police Authority’s imposition of a ban under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the area.

The petitioner claimed that the request for permission to hold the Martyrs’ Day rally, which the TMC organizes every year in front of Victoria House on the Esplanade, is pending with the police.

A dissident TMC group led by MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, also said it would hold a Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21.

The dissident faction was formed after the result of the West Bengal Assembly elections was announced on May 4.
