The governments of trade unions and state governments should spend more on education, especially in higher studies than to provide free of charge, which will not improve the standard of life of poor families, said G. Viswanathan, founder of Chancellor, Vit.
In his presidential address on phase II 2024-25, which was organized by the Universal Higher Education Trust in its campus, Mr. Viswanathan said that the government can provide free for recipients who are mostly families living under the poverty line (BPL). “There is a Lakh medical chair in the country, for whom more than 25 lakh aspirants appear every year. It reflects the need to increase the total number of medical seats. In other words, the government should spend more on higher education,” he said.
The Chancellor said the North Arcot district, which included today’s districts Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamei, was economically and educational many years ago. Public initiatives, such as scholarships and efforts of the state government, helped reduce economic backwardness and increase enrollment in schools and universities. Currently, the ratio of gross enrollment (GER) Tamil is over 50 % over the national average of 27 %.
As part of the loaf of Mr. Viswanathan, he said the scholarships were given 9,878 students at the 11.86 crore since the initiative started ten years ago. During 2024-25, the scholarships were given to 1,182 students. On this occasion was present BK Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, teacher (Coimbatore).
