Sathish Jarkiholi, Minister for Public Works, on Tuesday inspected the road safety work at Hulikal Ghat (State Highway 52) in Hosanagara taluk and directed the officials to complete the work expeditiously without compromising on quality.

The public works department has taken up road safety work and construction of retaining wall at the ghat by spending around ₹5.35 crore. On April 9 this year, three construction workers died during repairs due to a landslide. The incident delayed the repair work on the ghat. The movement of heavy vehicles was prohibited on the section.

The minister sought a detailed report from the officials on preventive measures to prevent landslides in the ghat area and ensure safety of motorists during monsoon. Inspecting the construction site closely, he told the engineers and contractors present that as the Ghat roads are very sensitive stretches, there should be no compromise in the quality of the retaining wall construction under any circumstances.

He said the work should be completed within the stipulated time without causing inconvenience to the public or vehicular traffic during monsoon. He added that as a safety measure, suitable warning boards and reflective markings should be installed at the workplaces for visibility at night.

“Traffic safety in the ghat stretches is of utmost importance to us. The department officials must work in a coordinated manner to ensure that the public does not face any hassle during monsoon and there should be no compromise in the quality of work,” said Mr. Jarkiholi.

Senior officers of the department were present.
