Exhibits made with more than nine tonnes of hill plantation crops commemorating the contribution of the state’s fishing communities were the theme of the second edition of the Hill Plantation Crops Show, which began at Kattery Park in Coonoor on Friday.

The three-day event was inaugurated by Ooty MLA M. Bhojarajan. According to officials of the state horticulture department, a total of 10 exhibits have been made with crops such as tea, coffee, betel, cashew, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm and areca nuts. They were made to resemble women in boats, an anchor and oar, a conch shell, a lighthouse and a coastal map of Tamil Nadu.

Officials said a total of nine tons of products were used in the production of the exhibits, which were themed on the contribution of female fishermen to the economy of the state and local communities.

Apart from the exhibits, various horticulture departments at the district level also set up their own stalls and displayed products from across the state. There are also four awards for farmers growing plantation crops.

Collector of Nilgiris, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, visited the second exhibition of plantation crops after its inauguration. She urged local residents, tourists and farmers to visit the exhibition, which will be held until Sunday.
