ENG vs IND: Another injury scare for India? Gurnoor Brar took off in the 1st ODI
India’s injury woes threatened to worsen again after fast bowler Gurnoor Brar was forced off the field during the closing stages of the first ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday 14 July.
Gurnoor, who was playing his first ever England international, produced one of the most striking spells of the innings. However, at the end of the inning, he stopped just before trying to play his final out. The right-arm seamer appeared to feel discomfort at the end of his run-up in the 48th over and immediately signaled towards the dressing room. Courtesy: Screengrab/JioStar
An Indian physio ran onto the field and spent several minutes stretching Gurnoor’s calves and hamstrings. However, the pacer was unable to continue and left the ground, with Axar Patel completing the rest. The extent of the injury was not immediately available from the Indian team.
England vs India 1st ODI: Live Updates
The sight of another fast bowler leaving the field will worry the Indian team management, especially considering the number of injuries they have been dealing with in recent weeks. Harshit Rana has already been ruled out of the rest of the England tour after suffering a hamstring injury during the T20I series, while all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also unavailable. India have also had a number of seemingly minor injuries over the last year causing long layoffs, so Gurnoor’s fitness is another issue the team will be watching closely ahead of the remaining two ODIs.
GURNOOR BRAR’S SPELL Vs. ENGLAND
Before his unfortunate departure, Gurnoor enjoyed a memorable outing with the ball on English soil.
England managed 61 for no loss after electing to bat, but the right-arm pacer triggered a collapse that swung the game in India’s favour. After conceding boundaries in his opening overs, Gurnoor adjusted his length brilliantly and struck twice in three deliveries.
He first pushed Jacob Bethell for a spot with a rising delivery that resulted in a catch in the deep, before removing the dangerous Ben Duckett with another ball that came off the surface awkwardly. Duckett’s dismissal was made even better by a brilliant catch by Jasprit Bumrah near the third man boundary.

The twin strikes opened the floodgates as England slipped from 61 for no loss to 107 for 6. Jasprit Bumrah, back after a six-week layoff, and Prasidh Krishna then piled on the pressure with wickets at regular intervals.
England eventually recovered with a 121-run partnership between Joe Root and Liam Dawson for the seventh wicket. Root made a composed 76 while Dawson scored a career-best 68 to help England recover from the deficit to reach 258.
Gurnoor finished with figures of 2 for 61 from nine overs, but India’s focus will now be firmly on his fitness after another worrying injury scare during a tour that has already tested the squad’s depth.
