Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ignites Bihar’s IPL dream as CM makes big claim
The dream of seeing a Bihar-based franchise in the Indian Premier League may finally be gaining momentum. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Friday backed the idea of an IPL team from the state, saying the government was working in “mission mode” to strengthen cricket infrastructure and create better opportunities for young players.
The discussion started after Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal asked why Bihar still does not have an IPL franchise despite producing several talented cricketers. His remarks came amid the rise of young batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has highlighted the cricketing talent emerging from the state.
In a post on X, Agarwal said Bihar deserved representation in IPL like franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. He also mentioned cricketers like Ishan Kishan and Saqib Hussain and highlighted Bihar’s contribution to Indian cricket.
“Don’t you think Bihar deserves its own team, just like Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders? After all, the soil of Bihar has given the country many exceptional cricketers,” Agarwal wrote.
He added that his dream was to ensure that the youth of Bihar get opportunities in all fields and promised “unconditional support” in promoting cricket and supporting the players from the state.
Responding to the post, Samrat Choudhary said the Bihar government shares the same vision.
“Totally agree with you. For cricket ’emotion’ of Bihar, Govt is working in ‘mission’ mode with clear ‘vision’. With your cooperation positive decision will surely be taken regarding Bihar IPL cricket team,” Choudhary wrote on X.
Bihar Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh also welcomed the proposal and said the sports department would work to make it a reality.
“All of us want the players of Bihar to get a right platform and a rightful place where they can enhance the reputation of Bihar through good performances. At this juncture, this tweet from Anil Agarwal ji is definitely welcome,” Singh told PTI Videos.
Singh also said that Bihar has the infrastructure needed to host IPL matches.
“The infrastructure is ready. To utilize this infrastructure, we are enthusiastically working to train our players not only in cricket but also in other sports. If we can host international competitions in rugby, hockey and other sports, then we can certainly host IPL matches,” she said.
The IPL expanded from eight teams to 10 in 2022 with the addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
