Former Spain and Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has announced his retirement
Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta announced on Friday that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, ending a decorated career spanning almost two decades. The 36-year-old confirmed the decision via a statement on social media, closing a chapter on a journey that has seen him play for clubs across Spain, France and England while also representing Spain on the international stage.
Azpilicueta retires as one of the most successful and remembered defenders of his generation trophy-laden spell with Chelsea FCwhere he became a fan favorite and club captain.
“This season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years of living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta said in a post on social media. “I’m grateful for every moment, for the wins, the tough losses, the challenges and most of all for the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way,” he added. The veteran defender also thanked the clubs and teammates who shaped his career across Europe. “To my teammates, coaches and all the staff at all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of, thank you for helping me grow as a person and a player every day,” he wrote.
“Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atltico de Madrid, Sevilla FC and representing my country on the biggest stages was a real privilege. Every moment meant so much to me,” added Azpilicueta.
Azpilicueta’s retirement marks the end of a career defined by consistency, leadership and versatility. Equally comfortable playing as a full-back or centre-back, he has gained wide respect for his professionalism and reliability. His most successful years came at Chelsea, where he spent 11 seasons and established himself as one of the modern giants of the club.
CHELSEA’S TROPHY LINED CAREER
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Olympique de Marseille in 2012 and made 508 appearances for the London side. His list of honors included two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, one UEFA Champions League title, two UEFA Europa League trophies, one UEFA Super Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. He also holds the Chelsea record for most appearances in major finals, with 13 of the club’s title-deciding matches.
Following his departure from Chelsea in 2023, Azpilicueta joined Atletico Madrid where he spent two seasons before moving to FC Sevilla last year. He made 16 appearances in La Liga this season, the final stretch of his professional career.
At international level, Azpilicueta earned 44 caps for the Spain national football team and represented the country at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
