The Water Authority is stepping up the pace of Jal Jeevan Mission work in Thiruvananthapuram district
Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is speeding up the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) works in Thiruvananthapuram. The district currently ranks fourth in the state in implementing the national flagship scheme to provide functional household connections (FHTCs) to rural households.
Several water supply schemes and components necessary to ensure connectivity in the rural areas of the district are expected to be commissioned during this year and next. Depending on the availability of funds, the KWA hopes to complete all the targeted works by December 2027, a senior district official of the water utility said.
Thiruvananthapuram district is just behind Kollam, Ernakulam and Alappuzhou in JJM implementation with 66% of targeted works completed, according to the JJM updates of the Jal Shakti Ministry. Of the total 6.84 lakh households in the districts, 4.51 lakh now have connections. Meanwhile, only six out of 73 panchayats and eight out of 94 villages in the district have the certified ‘Har Ghar Jal’ status, according to the department. The JJM program at the national level, with a revised deadline of 2028, aims to provide FHTC to all rural households.
15 billion project
In case of individual panchayat schemes, the 15 billion (million liters per day) project for Pallickal, Madavoor and Navayikulam panchayats is progressing fast, according to KWA. 60 percent of the work on the water treatment plant has been completed. This project is expected to be commissioned by mid-2027. Construction work on another project, earmarked for Varkala and adjoining panchayats, is also nearing completion.
18 billion project for Pulimath, Nagaroor and Karuvaram panchayats is awaiting electricity connection and is expected to be commissioned soon. 6 billion scheme for Mudakkal panchayat and 18 billion scheme for Pothencode, Andoorkonam and Mangalapuram panchayats are underway. Schemes for Chenkal, Karode and Kulathur panchayats and Kottukal and Athiyannoor panchayats are also underway, according to KWA.
A number of projects have already been completed and put into operation. They include a scheme involving Vamanapuram, Nellanad and Manickal panchayats; scheme for Attingal and adjoining panchayats and 11 billion scheme for Kuttichal and Poovachal panchayats. Land-related issues have delayed work on some schemes. Part of the operation of JJM in the district is also the expansion of existing distribution lines and the start-up connection.
