People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti has been placed under house arrest ahead of the Martyrs’ Day celebrations in Srinagar, her daughter Iltija Mufti said on Sunday (July 12, 2026).
“We were placed under house arrest on the eve of Martyrs Day for reasons best known to the J&K Police,” Ms Iltija wrote on X.
13 July is commemorated as Martyrs’ Day in Jammu and Kashmir as a tribute to the 22 persons who were killed by the Dogra Army outside the Central Jail in Srinagar in 1931. The LG administration dropped this day in 2020 from the list of public holidays.
“This is the normalcy they have established in Kashmir? Make no mistake the local government is also hand in hand with the police in Sidhra to demolish houses and put opponents in custody when appropriate,” Ms Iltija claimed.
