Defending an attack on a female medical student in the Sivagangai Medical College Hospital, doctors of the association described poor security measures on the Campuses of the Government Faculty of Medicine in the State.
GR Ravindranath, General Secretary, Medical Association for Social Equality, in a statement, expressed a shock over the incident, when the student was attacked by an unidentified person when she returned to the hostel on Monday evening.
It was worrying that there was no reasonable security and there was not enough rest with the basic equipment for medical trainees and postgraduate students in the Government Medical College hospitals in the state. Although the lack of facilities was raised several times, it was sad that the health department did not pay much attention to this problem, he said.
He noted that the Association has expanded full support for students protesting against Sivagangai Medical College, and demanded adequate facilities for medical trainees, postgraduate students, doctors, nurses and employees in all Medical College hospitals, including Sivagangai.
A. Ramalingam, Secretary General, Service Doctors and Postgraduate Association, said: “Attacks on Medicos became the order of the daily order due to security drops. No specific measures have been taken after so many incidents.
The Association of Medical Officers Tamil Nadu said in a statement issued that the attack raised serious concerns about the safety of doctors in government health institutions. It is deeply disturbing that such incidents are repeated despite the previous warning of lack of reasonable security measures. No concrete steps were taken to ensure the safety of students and doctors after rape and murder of a postgraduate physician in RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Calcutta.
The Association urged the government to take strict and immediate measures against responsible ones and ensure that strict measures were taken to prevent such incidents in the future. It is necessary to ensure adequate safety, correct infrastructure for doctors and strict responsibility for negligence.
